Meet Scott Ellsworth: Your Partner in Professional American English

American English tutor

I am an American native speaker with a lifelong obsession with how language actually works. My approach to coaching isn’t just about repeating phrases; it’s about the science of communication.

The Linguistics Advantage

I studied linguistics and also international relations at the University of California at Davis. This academic foundation means I don’t just tell you what sounds right; I can explain the phonetics, morphology, and syntax behind the “Standard American” accent. Whether you are struggling with vowel reduction or the subtle logic of the present perfect, I provide the technical “how-to” that generic tutoring misses.

Native Authority

I grew up in Northern California. My work as a language specialist began in San Francisco, and I have spent significant time in Washington, DC. These are areas where the clear, neutral American accent is used in global business, tech, and news. Having taught at a university level and worked as a professional translator for over a decade, I understand the precision required for high-stakes professional environments.

A Global Perspective for Global Professionals

I am fluent in German and Russian, and I have lived and worked in over a dozen countries—including four years in the Kyrgyz Republic, and time across Europe and East Asia.

Today, I live as a “connected nomad.” This isn’t just a lifestyle choice; it’s a professional asset. I understand the specific stress of navigating new cultures and the “cultural signalling” required to command respect in a foreign language. I don’t just teach English; I live the same global communication challenges my clients face every day.

I enjoy the “lightbulb moments” when a client finally masters a difficult sound or masters a complex grammar point. My goal is to show you how to “own” your English, step by step, so you can communicate with authority and ease.

A Life in Motion

I believe that understanding a language is inseparable from understanding the world. My travels allow me to stay curious and empathetic—traits I bring into every coaching session. Here are a few glimpses from my journey:
